Winter Fog @ Contra Loma
It can be foggy and chilly this time of the year in East County. Many people (in other parts of the country) laugh at our belly aches about our cold weather. Living here we can still work in the yard, play golf and go for long walks this time of year. No snow to dig out. I just got back from some really cold weather. I like to see snow, I even like the cold breeze in my face, as I walk from the car to the door. When I was a kid I didn't really mind. I thank God now I don't have to work outside in the cold.

James Donlon Antioch Mayor & Pioneer
Peter A. Donlon, Jr (left), James Donlon, (center) and Donald Schulte, (right)
James Donlon was Mayor of Antioch several times in the early 1900's. His business, Antioch Ice & Fuel, sold coal to heat homes and businesses. It was located at 606 Third St., (now City Hall parking). They also used the building as a community center and jail (maybe that's how they came up with the term "cooler" for jail). He had vending machines, at his business, so people could get coal and ice after hours.

Black Diamond Mines, Pittsburg
A friend was recently lamenting the fact that East County has lost it's rural country charm. The countryside he remembered has turned into shopping centers and asphalt. It's true this is no longer the rural farming community it was in the 20's and 30's but you can still feel it if you look. Deer Valley Road, Fairview Ave. and Black Diamond Mines hasn't changed much. So don't lament the country is still here and alive in East County.
